Political Content: A Security Risk?
Exploring whether engaging in political discussions introduces meaningful security risks for content creators on Twitch and other platforms.
This is not a political post, as I'm primarily focused on technology and online safety. However, does politics play a role in online safety?
I'm of the opinion that hate brigades and controversy pose a genuine risk to creators on Twitch and other platforms. I believe this can cause significant mental and emotional trauma and, in some cases, potentially lead to more serious consequences, including physical harassment.
This leads me to wonder: Is it worth the security risk for content creators to engage in political discussion if that isn't a niche they've already established?
Let's Think About This
Say I'm a gaming creator like Emiru, for example. I primarily spend my time doing gaming and cosplay, rarely engaging with real-world events. As we've seen recently, not speaking out can also generate backlash.
Many people were upset about her not speaking out on certain political issues. However, there is also the inherent risk that comes with becoming a political creator. You automatically place yourself in a much higher-risk business and social space, so to speak.
Gaming communities are already semi-toxic in some niches. So I have to wonder:
If we consider IRL streaming and attending conventions to be potentially risky, can engaging in political discussions also introduce a level of risk that should be taken into account when deciding whether or not to engage?
Who knows?
Until next time!
